Cognitive function in AD patients receiving galantamine 24 mg/day for 12 months or placebo for 6 months followed by galantamine 24 mg/day for 6 months [51]. Although patients who took galantamine 24 mg/day for 12 months were able to maintain cognitive function at baseline levels, patients who were on placebo for the first 6 months and then switched to galantamine could not achieve this level of functioning, indicating that early treatment provides the greatest benefit.
